Data vis teachable moment 🤓
Be careful reading bar charts. The T<2 was the most frequently chosen response. But the majority of respondants have used MATLAB for more than 2 years. The T<2 bar is longest at 38%, but the sum of the remaining bars is almost twice the percentage. 63% of respondants selected a value of T greater than 2 years (26% + 18% + 11% + 8% = 63%).
If there were only the two options below, imagine what the bar chart would look like.
  • T < 2
  • T > 2

Looks like most users (38%) have been using MATLAB for less than 2 years — shows a lot of newcomers in the community!

Yes. There are a lot of college students just learning MATLAB. I guess there is a good portion of students in the 2<T<5 category as well.

But I am done with MATLAB. I will not use it anymore, even if they paid me. It is just a bad product

Followup question: if you've also put > 20 years, did this also make you realize how old you are? :D
Since the inequalities are strict, my nerdy self is wondering how people should vote who have been using MATLAB for 2, 5, 10, or 20 years. My nerdy self then also argues the probability that anybody has been using MATLAB for exactly 2, 5, 10, or 20 years down to the nanosecond is very slim. In that case, just wait a nanosecond. :)
Another problem could of course be that people may not know down to the day (let alone nanosecond) when they started using MATLAB. ;)

I've a membership card here on my desk, from when they still issued one. Member since 1993. Doesn't mention a datenum.

Here you are, @Chen Lin !
My member number has changed though, since I changed jobs. At every job change, Matlab was for me a requirement to accept such job.

The poll probably reflects the learning curve

Yes, but also encouraging and good since almost 40% are pretty recent users.

This is an interesting poll. It looks like people who are visiting the Discussions area are more experienced users.
