converting 2 arrays into an array of structures

Hi,
I have 2 arrays
numbers = [1,2,3,4];
letters = ['a','b','c','d'];
i want to convert these into an array of 4 structures so that i can access the data by:
structure(2).number
which would output 2
and
structure(3).letter
which would output c

Seems like a bad idea. It makes indexing groups of data harder and slower. But, if you must:
structure=struct('number',num2cell(numbers), 'letter', num2cell(letters));
