How can i adjust the intensity of an image?

Hello
How can i adjust the intensity of an image with matlab? The purpose is to smooth and stretch the image histogram and increase the contrast of the image to be able to find a more precise threshold value.

The HISTEQ command, maybe?

That should not be necessary. Have you tried my thresholding utility? http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/fileexchange/29372-thresholding-an-image
If you still want to change the intensity anyway, you can use imadjust().
