surf plot with underneath image

How data can be shown as a surf plot and underneath, on the ground or x-y plane, the image is shown.

This FEX file looks like it would be applicable, though I haven't used it myself,

Basically, you could use it to place your image in the x-y plane of a 3D axis. Then apply HOLD ON. Then, finally, add your surf.
