Interpolating spatial orthogonal matrices

I have orthogonal matrices that is a function of space: The columns of a matrix value at each nodal point are orthogonal. I would like to create an interpolant for an unstructured grid that will yield orthogonal matrices at intermediate points.

What I've seen some people do is convert to quaternions and interpolate in that space instead.
