Why do the BEEP or ERROR functions in MATLAB not produce a beep sound?

When I use the ERROR or BEEP functions MATLAB does not produce my computer's default beep sound.

The BEEP and ERROR functions produce the default system sound. If you have configured Windows not to produce any sound, BEEP and ERROR will be silent.

Please go to Control Panel->Sound and Audio Devices->Sound and ensure that “Windows Default Beep” sound is enabled.
