Why does the installer hang indefinitely at about 80% when installing MATLAB 7.8 (R2009a) or higher on Windows?

When running the installer on Windows, the installer gets to about 80% and just sits there. I can cancel the installation, but if I let it run, it does not proceed any further.

This issue is currently under investigation. It seems the installer is unable to get past the .NET registration. Contact installation support for assisance here:
