Please take a look

I'm trying to extract the numeric data from a .txt file and add it to a vector, but I keep getting the error : "Improper assignment with rectangular empty matrix." This is my code :

    tid=fopen('file.dat');
     m(1:1000)=zeros();
     j=1;
       while( ~feof(tid))
        i=cell2mat(textscan(tid, '%1d', 1));
        m(j)=i;
        j=j+1;
       end

the numeric data file has stored 1000 digits, like this :

Hi,

to give more of an answer to your question: don't use textscan in a loop, but simply call

data = textscan(fid, '%1d', inf);
m = data{1}

Hi,

I would read it differently:

% open the file
fid = fopen('file.dat'); 
% read all data as characters:
data = fread(fid, inf, 'uchar');
% close the file
fclose(fid);
% you now have ascii codes, so subtract the ascii code for zero:
data = data - double('0');

Be aware though, that this approach only works if the file has no newlines, so all digits in one line. So in fact the next answer is I guess more preferably to use.
