accessing automation servers from different versions of MATLAB

I am writing C code to interact with the MATLAB automation server.

When I compile using the class ID for the 2010b server, then I cannot communicate with the 2011a server, and vice-versa.

Is there a way to access different automation server versions without explicitly specifying class IDs?

How do you connect to the ML automation server? I would guess engopen? How do you specify the class id?
