HDR image processing for luminance calculation

we use 'makehdr' command to create HDR image in MATLAB from 5 LDR image of different exposure value. But the obtained image is too bright and the luminance value obtained during image processing is too high. I want to know if there is any preprocessing of the image is required before giving the LDR image as the input to MATLAB
