Can I detect the time that the ambient sound exceeds a previously set limit

I would like to use my Laptop microphone and set a limit for ambient sound. Then I would like to find the exact time for the first time that the level exceeds the limit. Like detection of the time that something drops on and touches the surface.

I might be missing something, but this sounds simple. Assuming you are detecting the event of interest in a MATLAB script, you can just use

dt = datetime('now')

to get the exact time of the event.

Thanks, the thing is I'm at the beginning and I haven't connected the microphone to Matlab. So I am not obtaining the data yet. If you could help me with this from the first step, I would really appreciate!
