How do I convert an excel file to a cell array ?

I have an excel file that contains numbers and words and when I use the xlsread built in matlab function it recognizes the words as NaN's of course. So I was wondering if it was possible to pass through my excel file and be able to convert it to a cell. Any help will be great thanks!
