XCP master internal error, serial receive, Arduino external mode

I have a very simple model I am trying to deploy onto an Arduino Due target hardware in external mode (Monitor & Tune). Just trying to view some incoming data from Port 2.
I am getting prompted with
External Mode Open Protocol Start command failed
Caused by:
XCP Master internal error: Busy(0) or no timeout(2) for 252
