How to retrieve gene label list from clustergram saved as a figure.

I programatically produce clustergrams and saved them as .fig plots. I wish to obtain the gene list that runs down the vertical axis (on right side dendrogram is on left side) from the figure. The labels are often too numerous to display and I wish for a user to be able to focus in without having the code and data used to generate the plot.
