How can I add some icons to a matlab map

I would like to add a very limited number of icons to a detailed map I created with the Mapping toolbox. These icons would label selected interstate and state road. I already know that the mapping toolbox has no easy built in way to do this but I think the path foward is to make some small jpeg files and try to plot them at the correct position on the mapping axis. Any comments,hints or suggestions would be very helpful
