Printing multiple subplots to PostScript

I'm trying to print 40 subplots in one PostScript (-dpsc2) figure in matlab. It's not going very well. The 40 plots are just line plots that are vertically positioned one over the other. When I try to print them, they appear as just straight lines (which I know they aren't). If I try to print only some of the subplots this works fine.
My guess is that there isn't enough space in the figure to print them all and it's causing errors. To that end I tried using the -r and 'PaperSize' options to increase the space, but it doesn't seem to be doing much. Any help would be appreciated.
Notes: I'm running matlab in -nodisplay mode, and outputting this stuff to a file directly.

Please post the command used for creating the file.

print(h,'-dpsc2','-loose','-r600','figure1.ps');
However, I tried a variety of commands including not using -r, -loose, etc
Also tried stuff like this:
set(h,'PaperPositionMode','auto','PaperSize',[50 50])
etc.
