MATLAB R2020a crash on startup Mac High Sierra 10.13.6

I installed MATLAB and played around with it for a bit, however now two days later when I actually need to use it for my class it freezes immediately on startup. I see the splash screen, then the main window comes up but hovering the mouse over it results in the spinning pinwheel and when I use opt-cmd-esc to bring up the force quit window I see it in red and "not responding". I was able to get it working once after a reboot of the whole system but after that it started hanging up again.
