how to define a unknown matrix

i have 10 unknowns
for example d1_1 d1_2 d2_1 d2_2 d3_1 d3_2 d4_1 d4_2 d5_1 d5_2
and i would like to place them into a matrix d which
d ( : , : , 1 ) = [ d1_1 ; d1_2 ] ;
d ( : , ; , 1 ) = [ d2_1 ; d2_2 ];
. . . . . . . . . . .
is there any simpler way for me to define this d matrix?

If you have a relatively new version of the Symbolic Toolbox (R2011b or later I think it is),
d = sym('d', [5 2])

No. Symbolic Toolbox (or equivalent) is the only way to express unknowns.
Or is your question that you have 10 known values and you want to place them in an array?
