Question about the R2012b ribbon....
At a mathworks stand at a trade conference, I was confidently assured by the salesman that it would be possible to create your own tab on the toolstrip ribbon bar and insert your own custom functions here.
This was the one aspect of the ribbon that got me excited; I want to be able to create a new tab with shortcuts to the functionality of my system. However I can't seem to determine a way to do this.. Am I missing something or has this aspect been miscommunicated to me?

It's funny that, 4 years on, my google search for this topic lead my directly back to my own question.
I had in fact completely forgotten that I even asked this question before! I assume that nothing has therefore moved on in the meantime?
I'm vaguely aware of the existence of matlab 'Apps' - would that provide the functionality that I'm after?

Not a direct answer to the question but from R2021b, you can create custom toolstrip in Simulink and share them with your colleagues. More details in the documentation: https://www.mathworks.com/help/simulink/ug/create-custom-simulink-toolstrip-tabs.html

Probably, he meant you can add your shortcuts in the shortcuts tabe and that you also can create own categories. I couldn't find you can add a complete new tab. But lets see what others find.

Andreas is right. Shortcuts can be used to run arbitrary MATLAB code, but not map to other Toolstrip buttons.
You can also add any item from the Toolstrip to the quick access toolbar, which is (by default) just next to the search box at the top right of the desktop. You can make the toolbar wider by moving it below the Toolstrip.
Most users we have worked with have found this to be a nice way to have a custom environment with easy access to the controls you need most often.

You can move the quick launch toolbar by right clicking on it to move it under the big main toolbar, on the same line as the folder address bar. However this does not make it bigger. How do you make it bigger?

After more than an year of aggressive discussions about release 2012b, I am curious what is the future of ribbons (or toolstrips)? Will it be any more customizable?
Personally, I feel Matlab was so much better without the ribbons hassle. However, It seems that Mathworks has decided to go with them in all future releases. It would help if they, at least, make the ribbon configurable. As of now (2013b) they are not configurable at all. Different people like to interact with Matlab in different ways and it makes sense (at least to me) to allow users to decide what button to show on ribbon (and what not to show). Further, it would also help if there is an option to change the size of the buttons and stack/unstack buttons (eg: Breakpoints buttons are stacked together in a gigantic button).

You can indeed create custom toolstrips in Matlab, as I have shown in the following series of articles: https://undocumentedmatlab.com/articles/tag/toolstrip
Note that this relies on functionality that is not officially supported by MathWorks, but works very well in practice for the past 10-15 Matlab releases (maybe even older, I'm not sure).
