How to make sure MatLab outputs the full legend correctly?

I have 56 data lines that I plot. When I ask MatLab to insert a legend or call it in the command (either way I get the same problem)...
figureLegend = legend(figureAxes,'show');
MatLab only displays the first 50 data lines in the legend. If I click Refresh it updates to the full list of 56. This is not ideal since I want to automate the process. Any ideas as to why this is happening?

legends s***. they always display very weird behavior. I would introduce some pausing between plotting and legend insertion maybe ?
