Decoding text from a distorted audio file

So I've got an assignement for bonus points that is asking me to decode a text message embedded somewhere inside an audio file. I don't know how the text is coded inside, it could be morse code, it could be anything.
Basically the original audio file is a mp3 of a violin concerto with a loud and constant high pitched tone in the background. Using the filter(a,b,x) function the tone is no longer there and I'm left with the concerto.
My plan was to download a separate version of the concerto and attempt to compare the two mp3 waves on a chart, but the only difference is the wavelength intensity, and other than that I see no real patterns.
I'm not here to beg for code, just ideas on how to find a way to analyze the original or filtered mp3 in a way that I could find anomolies compared to the 3rd party mp3.
