Excel Link Problem with Manual Start

Just upgraded to excel 2010. All my stuff used to work. Now when I use the preference of start excel link at startup my stuff still works. If I use manual start for excel link it doesn't seem to connect. I have to use manual start so I don't take forever opening templates and chew up shared licenses.
