Hi, I'm just reading now your question. I use both GMT (on linux) and the MATLAB Mapping Toolbox and I think that the map quality on gmtis better, I mean in a purely aesthetic sense. The Mapping Toolbox on matlab I think has many limitations. Just for example to zoom in and out in the matlab figure you have many weird effects with the sizes of the window and the coordinate frame.
The gmt toolbox it's a great idea, you can use the powerful and easier matlab to organize your data and then you can use gmt just to plot them. It would be great but actually this toolbox works really bad to me (if you have a better experience let me know!). This toolbox would be also very useful to start a share between who uses GMT and the ones using MATLAB... I don't know how is the situation to your place, but to me there are these two opposite parties!
