How to change background and line color of a "polar" (NOT polarplot) axes?

Please help me to change the background color of a "polar()" axes.
I want the background to be black and the line color to be green.
Note:
I cant use "polarplot()" because i am plotting custom images as marker on the "polar()" axis using "imagesc()". polarplot()is not allowing me to do that.
