Modifying a Class

This question may sound stupid, but here goes..
I am using Matlab to manipulate an object defined using Java API through COMSOL. Should I just write a function that takes in this object and spits out a copy of it:
function [ model] = funcname[model]
Is this bad programming practice? Should I be doing something more elegant like defining a new class with this function as a method?

Looks fine to me. Keep it simple and stupid.
