Apply least squares inversion to 2-D model

Hi all, I am stuck with inversion problem! I got 2-D plot made by contourf(x,y,z). Then I need to apply least squares inversion to that plot. Don't understand mechanism of this inversion and how apply it for 2-D.
I greatly hope you can help me!
