I'm screensharing with two macs (using the "Screen Sharing" app) running High Sierra (10.13.6), and when using MATLAB (2018a) if I click away from the matlab window and then click back, my cursor appear in the editor window or the command line. However, mouse clicks in the directory or the menu bars still work. My workaround has been to close and re-open Matlab, which is not ideal. Any idea how to fix this problem?

I am having the same problem. If I leave it alone for 10+ minutes I am able to type into the command window. Closing and re-opening Matlab does not work for me.

Remote access is not a supported workflow in any operating system. Which means that they don't promise it will work, and might not be willing to spend time investigating or repairing.
Virtual desktops also unsupported. On Windows 10 there are some known issues with using multiple desktops (even if all the MATLAB access is from a single desktop.) Officially virtual desktop are also not supported on Mac. Which puzzles me some since all desktops on Mac have been virtual since os-x 10.6 (in 10.5 they had to be enabled specifically.) But I suppose it means that MATLAB does not try to deal with questions like what the Position of a figure means if it is in a different virtual desktop.
Anyhow...
Have you experimented with something like TeamViewer? It is somewhat pricey for commercial use, but for personal use it is free. I use it to administer my mother's pc from hundreds of miles away; it is useful.

If I right-click on the Matlab icon in the tray/dock and select 'command window', it appears to return focus to the command window and provide me with a blinking cursor. I can continue with the cursor until I copy-paste into the command window. That seems to disrupt the process and then I have to go back to the tray and select command window again.

Thanks, this is a good kludge!
