how to set up JVM running under MCL

I have a colleague providing a compiled library (MCL) from r2014a. I got the matching r2014a MATLAB Compiler Runtime package, and built a C++ front-end under MSVS2017.
If I do NOT provide the "-nojvm" flag to mclInitializeApplication(), I get an exception thrown at myEntryPointInitialize(). However, when I do provide this flag, the mlxMyEntryPoint() fails when it tries to execute some java code.
My colleague starts up mclInitializeApplication(NULL,0), and can call mlxMyEntryPoint, since they do have a jvm running.
Question: What do I need to do to get a valid JVM instance for my colleague's runtime library?
