How do you make 3d graphing actually look nice?

I decided to play around with the patch command today and now I can draw all kinds of lovely little shapes. My problem is I want to graph them in 3d now and the scaling of the axis is not how I want it to be.
I can draw a rectangular prism that is twice as tall as it is long and deep and rotate it and well the axis are correct, but they just rescale and so there is like no way to tell that it actually is twice as high. This could just be an optical illusion of sorts resulting from the direction I'm looking at it from, but it seems I am missing something, or at least I hope I am.
Any insight would be appreciated.
