Must MATLAB be installed in a machine so I can use c/c++ library for matlab file io?

I bought a license for matlab for mac. My computation is mainly in c++ and I use the mat.h and matlab engine to save the c++ array to matlab file format. I would like to compile the same c++ code in another machine running linux OS but no matlab installed. Is there any way I can use that matlab library for matlab matrix format i/o in the linux system? Thanks.
