Is it possible to use xls functions whitout excel installed?

I'm writing a UI with guide and I have to store data in xls files, but the PC where I want to execute my .exe doesn't have excel installed. Is there a way for doing this with open office or another free source?

The documentation for xlswrite says,

If your computer does not have Excel for Windows®, or if the COM server (part of the typical installation of Excel) is unavailable, then the xlswrite function: Writes array A to a text file in comma-separated value (CSV) format. A must be a numeric matrix.
