Figure Fonts - Matlab and Ubuntu

Hello - I want to change the font of my figures to Times. Changing the font via set(gca, 'fontname', 'Times') does not change the actual font, but get(gca, 'fontname') comes up as 'Times'. I know this is a longstanding issue - I followed the suggestions here https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1762805 to no avail.
I am using Matlab2017a with Ubuntu 16.04. Any solutions? Thank you!
