function print() cancels previous commands

Hi, I'm formatting a plot with several commands about xlabels, ticks, and so on. Afterwards, I use the print command to save the picture in this precise format for inclusion in latex. However, print() cancels previous commands. More precisely, I am moving the xlabel a little bit downwards because it would bump into XTickLabels otherwise since I enlarged them
XLABEL=get(ax_handle,'xlabel'); set(XLABEL,'position',get(XLABEL,'position') + [0 10 0]);
This works fine until I use
print(fig_handle,figure_name,'-dpdf');
which puts back the xlabel to its original position.
I don't understand what's going wrong with this.. could someone help me?
Thanks,
Ben
