using 'fprintf' with char format

 x = input('Enter the grade (1-100):');
 if  x >= 90
     grade = 'A';

     grade = 'B';

     grade = 'D';

     grade = 'F';

 printf('grade is %??',grade)

This is my script, I want '??' here. pleae help me! I couldn't find this on 'help fprintf'
