Why do I receive License Manager Error -140 when trying to start MATLAB?

I have updated MATLAB to R2017a, and have applied the new license file to the network license manager. Why do I receive License Manager Error -140 when trying to start MATLAB?

License Manager Error -140 is caused by trying to host an a newer license file on an older release of the License Manager. Please update your License Manager by following the instructions in the link below:

Yes, there have been posts from other people who were not able to use newer versions of MATLAB on client machines until they upgraded the license server.
I do not recall anyone posting indicating that upgrading the license server did not fix the problem. However, if you happened to be using a network.lic file that referred to multiple license servers (for redundancy) then you might need to upgrade them all.
