How to find optimal value of variables

Hi,
I am writing an image classification algorithm. I am supremely confident that my algorithm will work, atleast in theory.. However, it has 8 variables that control different parameters of the program.
Is there any method to find the value of the different parameters to maximize my classification rate?

generally there are lots of algorithm like ICA,genetic algorithm,SA etc.but,they determine the variables for the minimum output.by the way if you make your cost function like 1/realoutput then it may work.code of ICA,GA,SA are readyly available in matlab file exchange
