Transmitting an event from one instance to another

Is there any way to transmit an event from one instance to another? For example, if you press a button in one instance is it possible to cause a similar event in another instance? Would BOOST:InterProcess work with MATLAB? FYI: Each instance drives a high-speed acquisition system that do not play well together when they are in the same instance but different threads.
