Simulink and tethered mode

Hi! I'm newbie to Simulink and Arduino. I'd like to know if is there in Simulink any kind " tethered mode" to test and run code written from Simulink for arduino platform without deploy the code to the arduino board by means " run on target hardware" like when I run a code in Mathworks in tethered approach. In other words, is mandatory to send code to the arduino board ( so that it can works even in embedded approach) in Simulink or not? Has Simulink only embedded approach or even tethered approach ( like programming in mathworks)? Thanks in advance
