Image Classification for ripple patterns

Hello, I want to create a program that could identify airglow ripples in an allsky image. The program should be able to differentiate between a photo like the top one which has visible streaks vs the bottom one which doesn't have those streaks. I've looked at the Matlab examples for image classification, but most of them analyze solid objects or characters. What would be the best approach for this application?
