How to change the formula to detect vertical line and horizontal line ??

I only can figure out how to get the horizontal line. And vertical line is just switch the two variables. But how can I combine them together??
% Calculate the Gradients
[dIx, dIy] = gradient(Jgray);
B = abs(dIx) - abs(dIy);
