What is the best way to increase contrast of nuclei in a cervical image?

I really need this because I'm trying to separate them. I attached one of the images too and I appreciate any advice about how to do this process. Thank you very much!

We would need to know what stain you’re using. Nuclei are basophilic, but in epithelial cells, the nuclei are usually pynknotic, so they may not show up well except at higher magnifications.

What are the nuclei? Aren't they the small dark dots? If so, why are some apparently not in cells? And why can't you just threshold for dark things and do a size filter with bwareaopen()?
