How can I exchange the values from a GUI function (say edit_text) with the external function in a separate file.

Example:
value_as_string = get(handles.editbox1, 'String');
value_as_number = str2double(value_as_string);
result = Name_of_External_Routine(value_as_string, value_as_number);
set(handles.editbox1, 'String', result);
