In which way communicates the child model inside the mex-file with the parent model as an executable?

Dear MATLAB,
I like to run a Simulink Model under rapid accelerator mode. In this model I have implemented a child model which runs under accelerator mode. So my question is: How communicates the child model inside the mex-file with the parent model as an executable? Did they communicate over MATLAB or Simulink? Or did they have an extra communication channel?
