How to define a variable.... very simple

Hey everyone, I am trying to solve the equation a*x^2+b*x+c=0 for the variable x. I have tried to type in,
syms a b c x
and get this result,
??? Undefined function or method 'syms' for input arguments of type 'char'.
This is the simplest thing and is driving me crazy!!!!!! I am just trying to get the hang of solving equations before I start to tackle my much harder assignment.
If somebody can tell me how to define a variable I will be so greatful.

You do not have the Symbolic Toolbox installed.
