How to add High quality image on MATLAB GUI

How to add High quality image on MATLAB GUI? Currently am using imread to put an image on GUI page. But, the image seems to be downgraded when its shows up on GUI.
There should be some better way. Please help.
Note: I use MATLAB2011a

Is the image RGB or grayscale or pseudocolor? How large is it? How are you displaying it on your GUI? What is the size of the area that you draw it in to?
