Alternatively, you can use COM but that is, if I think I read between the lines, what you're trying to work around?

I'd ask "Why not just write stream files instead?" They're supported natively on both sides and other than the admitted advantage that .mat files have the variable information embedded in them, they're quite similar otherwise in performance; the stream file may outperform .mat in fact.
