My students could not open an account in Matlab Online

I have a group of students who tried to use MatLab online and the platform didn't allow them. Can you explain why?

MathWorks has been undergoing a ransomware attack for over a week. You can see updates at their status page.
I know MATLAB Online was affected, but looks to be operational now. They may also have had trouble creating accounts. It looks like that functionality came back only very recently.
