Simulating ESS with real world data

Hello I am a electrical engineering student doing a project with a local power company using the data from their stations with the goal to research how a ESS might be able to peak shave and increase the utilization rate of the local grid. I have run into several problems while doing this however, initially I tried to solve this with a battery and doing a 3 phase inverter to charge/discharge the battery but the battery would draw hundreds or thousands of ampere while trying to charge it and I was not able to implement any current limiters. Furthermore I tried to simplify the design even further just using a normal load as discharge and a synchronous machine as a generator for the peak shaving aspect aswell as a programable 3 phase voltage supply.
In the image of the simulink project i have used relays for switching the "discharging" of the power supply, acting as a battery and a generator as the "grid".
Maybe I am missing something crucial needed to make this work but I simply cannot understand what this might be?
Thanks for all and any help I might get, thanks.

Simscape Battery provides an example that shows how to model a battery energy storage system (BESS) controller and a battery management system (BMS) with all the necessary functions for the peak shaving. The peak shaving and BESS operation follow the IEEE Std 1547-2018 and IEEE 2030.2.1-2019 standards. This example can be a good starting point.
