Curly braces within a subscript?

Is it possible to put a pair of curly braces within a graphics text subscript? I understand that curly braces are used as grouping symbols for the contents of a subscript. For example, in a graphics program that includes the comand

text(0,1,-0.075,'\fontname{Times} \fontsize{14}\bf \ite_{2}');

the graphic output places the (boldfaced and italicized) e_2 at the designated location, as in the figure below:

But I am unable to create a text output that has curly braces within the subscript, so that the notation of a set would be within the subscript. When I have tried something like

text(0,1,-0.075,'\fontname{Times} \fontsize{14}\bf \ite_{{2}}');  

in an attempt to get (boldfaced and italicized) e_{2} at the designated location Matlab apparently ignores the inside nested curly braces and produces only (boldfaced and italicised) e_2.

I need to make a number of tickmarks in a bar part of the form

P_{1/10} P{2/10} . . .

but I am only able to produce

P_1/10 P_2/10 . . .

Is there a way to have MatLab actually include curly braces as symbols within a text subscript?
