When I start Matlab R2023b on my laptop under Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS I get:
HP:~\> matlab&
[2] 14090
@HP:~\> MATLAB is selecting SOFTWARE OPENGL rendering.
Fontconfig warning: "/usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail/05-reset-dirs-sample.conf", line 6: unknown element "reset-dirs"
Gtk-Message: 17:59:43.707: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"
The command window opens OK, but the command ">> edit" opens a window with
Unable to open this file in the current system configuration
and I get stuck.
This is the first time I run Matlab since I upgraded Ubuntu. The Gtk Message occurred also under Ubuntu 22.04, but everything worked OK there.

There seem to be problems with the latest updates to 24.04 with respect to MATLAB. Yours is the third post I have seen on 24.04.2 LTS in the last two days.
According to MATLAB and Simulink Requirements 24.04 is supported.
It would be best for you to Contact Support for installation problems. Include the URL to this thread so that you do not have to reepeat everything you wrote here in your message to MathWorks.
Please post back here with the solutions MathWorks provides.
In the interim, this Tom’s Hardware post (that I first read a couple days ago) may be relevant.
